St. Clare of Assisi: A Light That Still Shines

When people hear the name St. Clare of Assisi, they often think of her connection to St. Francis. And while the two shared a deep friendship and spiritual vision, Clare’s story is remarkable in its own right. She wasn’t simply following someone else’s path. She was boldly answering God’s call in a time when that wasn’t easy for a young noblewoman.

Clare was born in Assisi, Italy, around 1194 to a wealthy family. But despite the comfort of her upbringing, she felt drawn to a life of radical simplicity and devotion to Christ. Inspired by the preaching of St. Francis, she secretly left her family home one night and joined his growing movement. Clare eventually founded the Poor Clares, a religious order devoted to poverty, prayer, and trust in God’s providence.

Her commitment to poverty was so strong that she fought for what became known as the “Privilege of Poverty.” Clare wanted her community to rely entirely on God rather than property or wealth. That kind of trust can sound intimidating, but Clare lived it with incredible joy and courage.

One of the most beloved stories about St. Clare happened when Assisi was threatened by invading soldiers. Clare, who was very ill at the time, had the Blessed Sacrament brought to the convent walls. Holding the Eucharist, she prayed for protection. According to tradition, the attackers fled, and the city was spared.

Near the end of her life, Clare was often too ill to attend Mass with the other sisters. Yet she longed deeply to be present at the Eucharist. Tradition tells us that while she was bedridden, she was able to see and hear the Mass being celebrated on the wall of her room, as though it were projected there for her. Because of this miracle, St. Clare is now known as the patron saint of television and communications.

St. Clare reminds us that holiness doesn’t require grand achievements or public recognition. Sometimes it looks like quiet faithfulness, deep prayer, and trusting God even when the future feels uncertain.

And maybe that’s why her name fits so well. Clare means “bright” or “clear.” More than 800 years later, the light of her faith still shines.

St. Clare of Assisi, pray for us.
